Rooting Multiple Fig Cuttings
Not many posts have been made on the blog, because all the action has been happening on the fig tree page.
Over the last few months, many fig cuttings have been hoarded and several fig trees have been purchased. We (the royal we) got involved in a couple of fig groups, such as What The Fig on FaceBook and the OurFigs private forum. We have made many visits to the online auction forum FigBid to find reputable sources of great cuttings.
This year is shaping up to have an actual
winter! Our fig trees "melted" from the frost and are going dormant. The frost is okay, fig trees are pretty hardy and will wake up when spring arrives.
Frosted Fig Tree
We planted several started from tissue cultures in ground early to mid 2017 and they grew well, then started making little figlets around November, 2018. We should have loads of different fig varieties next year.
Pallet Compost Bins
Following the crazy and unplanned growth of our vining plants, we needed to up our composting capacity and threw together some well aerated bins out of old pallets. We think they turned out well enough. They even have little shelves to put our gourds up for drying now that the vines have shriveled up and died in the cold.
Pallets are great because they allow air ventilation around the bottom and the half size fronts will allow us to easily get a turning fork in there and move it around. We should start frequenting Starbucks around here and see if we can pick up some coffee grounds.
We didn't plan much of a winter garden. We are really trying to get the area organized more than gardening at the moment. We should have more to post about closer to spring time this year.
